Name:The Near Side of the Nightside
Location:(states/regions/territories)
Membership:Moderated
Posting Access:Anybody
Setting:

The Nightside. The dark, hidden twin and sick heart of London. A place that exists in its own reality, apart from all things Normal and Sane. Where the really wild things are, where souls are bought and sold at discount prices. A place where when they say 'anything goes' they really mean it. Where the traffic likes to eat people, so stand well clear of the road.

Anyone can get into the Nightside, from anywhere. A wrong turn, a door that isn't always there, a wrong number dialed in the wrong phone at the wrong time, timeslips that appear and vanish at random - there's a not-at-all-well-known network of entrances, and not even a tenth of them from the actual city of London - or at least not the one you'll find on the other side of the 'safe' doors.

Getting back out again isn't always so simple, at least not to the same time and place you came from. Most of those doors don't swing both ways, and some go to other places entirely. One particularly nasty one leads into a strip club where the dancers start nude and get less covered from there. You can find -anything- in the Nightside.

The Nightside takes freedom very, very seriously; it's the one place in Creation that's truly free from the influences of Above and Below. True angels and demons (we're not talking about Disgaea-style demons and angels, as an example - Biblical Heaven and Hell only) will find their powers greatly diminished within the bounds of the city. Doesn't mean they don't show up - there are refugees from -everywhere-, here, and not nearly all of them willing.

There are Powers and Dominations known as the Authorities that run the Nightside, and they eat newbies for breakfast - some of them literally. Magic and protection from it is -cheap-, but not always effective. You can buy or find just about -anything- here, but not everything is what it seems. A favorite saying among locals is 'Commerce, red in tooth and claw' and they mean it. Buyer very much beware, and never sign -anything- without reading everything and checking for invisible ink.

Characters can turn up from literally anywhere and anytime. Ghosts are perfectly welcome, as are angels, demons, ponies, cyborgs, dragons, elder gods, and all other manner of fictional beings great and small (though some may find themselves limited in power and size; the Authorities have that kind of power, and the Nightside protects itself as well). Be warned, though, that elves are likely to get a very cold reception.

Oh. And the Nightside does *so* love to break a hero. Trying to clean the place up (or take it over) by force is a surefire way to get swatted down. Hard.
